Stephen Hawking says there will be a human apocalypse at the hands of artificial intelligence, and maybe we should listen to him.

The physicist whose groundbreaking work has tackled fundamental physics biggies like black holes, the Big Bang, and how time works, warned in an interview with BBC, that while our current "primitive forms" of artificial intelligence have been useful, at a more developed state, the technology can surpass humans and "spell the end of the human race."

Basically, when it comes to the game of improving as a "species," robots would win out over humans every time. While artificial intelligence technology can evolve at a rapid speed, Hawking reminds us that humans can only change as fast as biological evolution. It took almost five million years for our species just to stand up straight. Who knows how long until we develop laser beam eyes to take on enemy robot armies?

So as humans wait millions of years to evolve, the artificial intelligence we've created will "take off on its own, and redesign itself at an ever increasing rate."

Hawking delivered this gloomy take on artificial intelligence in response to a question about his own personal use of AI, which he uses to communicate. His new speech-generating device developed by Intel learns how Hawkings thinks and suggests words for him.

As genius as Stephen Hawking is, maybe we should give robots a little more credit. Who knows, maybe instead of destroying the human race they'll wind up saving us?
