If you haven’t heard yet, Bob Ross’ official YouTube channel has started to release episodes of the painter’s hit show The Joy of Painting. Now, a whole new generation will get the chance to watch the soft-spoken, Afro-rocking Ross explain how to create landscapes using simple colors and techniques. Besides the educational value of the show, many have pointed out that The Joy of Painting is also an extremely relaxing experience. Why is that?

Though you could make an argument that the show’s relaxing nature is due to Ross’ happy demeanor and philosophical sayings like “there are no mistakes, just happy accidents,” the supposed scientific explanation is that the show triggers many people’s autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), reports NewsWeek.

ASMR is a strange reaction that causes a brief tingling sensation down the back of a person’s head and spine sort of like the tingly feeling you get when you really like a song. Though there is little to no scientific proof that the phenomenon actually exists, there are communities all over the internet that are dedicated to sharing videos and sound clips that trigger it.

ASMR is typically triggered by random, soft sounds such as leaves rustling in the wind or someone slowly ripping pieces of paper. When it comes to Ross, he triggers ASMR in certain viewers with the sounds of his brush going over the canvas and the soft-spoken quality of his voice. Not only do the dull brush strokes vary slightly with every happy tree he makes, but the sound’s almost amplified by how soft he discusses what he’s doing.

Though ASMR is hard to describe to those who have never experienced it, the best way to think of is to compare it to the feeling you get when you’re listening to a really good song that causes your body to briefly tingle. This is called frisson and is due to an extreme emotional response brought on by music.

With ASMR working overtime (for those that can experience it), Ross giving little pieces of life advice that fill our minds with positive affirmations and getting to watch a peaceful nature scene come to life, it’s no wonder that a quick viewing of the program can lull you into a meditative trance.

You can watch the very first episode of The Joy of Painting above. Check out Bob Ross’ YouTube channel for more.
